How we rate on build date

Historic claims and quote data from the market suggests that the age of your house contributes to your insurance risk. Older houses are considered higher risk. They are more likely to have older pipes, for example, which are more susceptible to bursting or older electrics which pose a higher fire risk.

It is worth saying that this is one of those insurance questions we all hate… Not everyone accurately knows when the house or flat they are living in was built… There are ways of finding out via the land registry but that is a hoop we would rather you weren’t forced to jump through.

We are working hard to be able to find this information in other ways so we don’t have to bug you with a question you might not have an accurate answer for.

It is also worth saying that whilst at the moment our rating is based on the original build year (i.e. when the foundations were laid).  In the future, we hope to make this assessment more sophisticated by also taking renovations and reconstruction into consideration.
